A Cameron man charged with shooting into an occupied home pleaded guilty to one count of attempted murder and three counts of wanton endangerment on Friday, said Marshall County Prosecutor Joe Canestraro.
Matthew Horn had been charged with 15 counts of attempted murder, 15 counts of wanton endangerment with a firearm, 11 counts of child abuse, and one count of creating risk of substantial injury or bodily harm. With the plea, Horn was sentenced to five years on each wanton endangerment charge, to be served consecutively for a total of 15 years and sentenced to three to 15 years on the attempted murder charge.
Horn could serve as many as 30 years in prison, and Canestraro said he’ll serve at least 7 1/2.
According to the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, on an early May morning, Marshall County 911 received a call reporting a man attempting to force entry into a home located on Dragon Highway in Cameron. During the incident, the suspect allegedly fired multiple rounds into the occupied home.
Upon arrival, officers observed apparent bullet damage to the front of the home and located numerous spent 9mm shell casings along U.S. Route 250. Investigators later determined that approximately 15 rounds had been fired into the residence, which was occupied by 15 individuals at the time, including multiple juveniles.
Horn was identified as the suspect. According to witness statements, Horn had allegedly been involved in a verbal dispute with family members earlier in the evening before arriving at the residence. Witnesses stated that after attempting to gain entry into the home, Horn allegedly fired multiple rounds toward the residence while family members, including children, sought shelter inside.
