Full House at Animal Shelter Means Big Break for Adopters

TRIADELPHIA -- The Ohio County Animal Shelter, 7011 National Road, is full and, in an effort to clear its kennels, is offering dogs and cats at half-price through the end of August.
The shelter typically charges $160 for dogs but is currently charging $80. Cats typically cost $60 but are currently priced at $30. The adoption fee includes having the animals spayed or neutered.
There are 22 dogs and 25 cats at the shelter.
"We have a good variety and range of dogs - ages and sizes," said Shae Kushmer, a kennel technician. "We have a few puppies. We have a lot of pit mixes. We have a lot of middle-aged, older cats. We do have two 8-week-old kittens and two 9-month-old kittens. The rest are 2 years old and up to 12 years old."
She noted the animals are fully vaccinated, including against rabies.
"We've just lowered the adoption price to hopefully get some more adopters in. We've been a little slow here lately," Kushmer said.
On Monday afternoon, several dogs took a break from their kennels to visit with people. Dobby, a female dog, was sweet and somewhat shy but loved belly rubs and being petted.
Cinnabon, a male dog, was excited to be out in the lobby and immediately went to the toy box. He enjoyed playing tug-of-war and fetch and would also sit for treats.
Munchkin, a 7-year-old female cat, came out of her cage and immediately sought attention from anyone willing to give it to her. She is petite and has a cute, semi-smooshed face.
Volunteer Brynley Lavayen, 10, got to pet and feed Munchkin. Lavayen also makes and sells pet-themed necklaces at the shelter. Her mother, Heather Lavayen, said her daughter has raised more than $10,000 for animal shelters through her jewelry sales.
