WHEELING -- The National Alliance on Mental Illness of Greater Wheeling is hosting free art therapy gatherings twice a month.

Julie Gomez, executive director of NAMI Greater Wheeling, said the Art Therapy Group will meet at 5 p.m. the first and third Tuesday of each month at the NAMI office, 1035 Chapline St., Wheeling. The first class is scheduled for 5 p.m. Sept. 15.

The program is free and art supplies will be provided. No registration is necessary; participants can just show up.

"We know our clients at our Adult Peer Center really enjoy doing art so we wanted to expand this and host a group during the evening to include more individuals in our community," she said.

"It’s free to attend. You don’t have to be an artist or talented in art to participate. The intent is to give individuals a structured format to express themselves, their feelings and emotions, through art while engaging in a community of support. There will be a structured project for each group."

The program will last about an hour and will be led by an art therapist.

Gomez said the gathering is a "great way to participate in self-care and join a community of support and caring."

She noted that anyone age 15 or older is eligible to attend. For more information, call 304-905-0635 or email namigreaterwheeling@namiwheeling.org.
