More than 1,700 Northern Panhandle residents were left without power for a few hours Tuesday, as tree limbs in power lines sent those folks into the dark.
The outages began early Tuesday morning and affected Appalachian Power customers in a narrow swath that reached from the neighborhoods around Oglebay Park Resort south into Moundsville. That included the usually busy stretch of National Road were Dunkin Donuts, 7 Brew Coffee and Tim Horton’s, among others, all reside.
The outage led to the closures for Tuesday of Woodsdale Elementary School, Wheeling Country Day School and The Linsly School, all of which sit in that zone.
A separate outage affected hundreds in Bethlehem.
Appalachian Power spokesperson Erikka Storch said tree limbs hit power lines in Bethlehem and along GC&P Road in Wheeling, which led to the outages. Appalachian Power was able to quickly switch customers to different circuits in the system and power was restored in those neighborhoods by Tuesday afternoon.
Storch reminded residents not to touch downed power lines in the road, as they could be live and lead to electrocution.
