WHEELING -- YWCA Wheeling has announced new leadership within its board of directors, naming Alex Weld as board president and Janet Hewitt as vice president.
Weld serves as project outreach specialist at FirstEnergy, where she leads stakeholder engagement for major infrastructure projects, working at the intersection of energy, community development and public engagement.
She previously served as executive director of Generation West Virginia, advancing workforce and leadership initiatives across the state, and as executive director of Wheeling Heritage, where she led nationally recognized downtown revitalization efforts.
A Wellsburg native, Weld currently serves as chair of the Wellsburg Urban Renewal Authority and is actively involved in regional economic development initiatives.
Hewitt joins as vice president following a distinguished 42-year career with American Electric Power Co., retiring in 2024. She holds a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Grove City College and continues to stay engaged professionally through the West Virginia and Pittsburgh chapters of WiNUP (Women's International Network of Utility Professionals).
Hewitt also serves on the Laughlin Memorial Chapel board, resides in Moundsville and has two children and two granddaughters.
"Alex and Janet each bring strong, thoughtful leadership and a deep commitment to our community," said Lori Jones, executive director of YWCA Wheeling. "Their experience and vision will help guide YWCA Wheeling as we continue to grow and meet the evolving needs of those we serve."
As YWCA Wheeling looks ahead, the organization remains focused on key milestones, including the completion of renovations at its historic 1100 Chapline St. building, transforming the space to better serve women and families for generations to come.
This progress comes on the heels of breaking ground for Cathy's Haven, a new transitional housing initiative that will expand support for women in recovery and re-entry programs.
"I am honored to serve as Board President of YWCA Wheeling," said Weld. "This organization plays a vital role in strengthening our community, and I look forward to working alongside Executive Director Lori Jones and my fellow board members to continue advancing its mission."
YWCA Wheeling continues its commitment to eliminating racism, empowering women and providing life-saving services, including domestic violence support, recovery and re-entry programs and community outreach initiatives that impact more than 9,000 individuals annually.
