Having some fun on the basketball court should end up being a pretty big assist for Bethlehem Apostolic Temple and its annual Thanksgiving food distribution.

The church will hold a charity basketball event — the Ohio Valley Lions versus the Ohio Valley All-Stars — at 6 p.m. Nov. 8 at Wheeling University’s Alma Grace McDonough Center. The two teams are an eclectic group of local leaders and celebrities playing to help raise money for the Bethlehem Apostolic Temple’s Thanksgiving distribution, to be held at 11 a.m. Nov. 21 at the North Wheeling Community Dream Center.

Bishop Darrell Cummings, lead pastor at the church, said times have been tight for many throughout the Ohio Valley, as prices have climbed and wages haven’t followed suit.

“We’re in a time where more people are struggling with food insecurity than before,” Cummings said, “and more people are struggling just trying to put gas in the tank and make it to work. And so we believe this year takes on a special need and we’re grateful for those who are able to work with us.”

Several local leaders are stepping in to participate in the Nov. 8 game. Among those vocalizing their support and hitting the court in November are West Virginia Sen. Laura Wakim Chapman, R-Ohio, Del. Shawn Fluharty, D-Ohio, and Tammy Kruse, development director for Youth Services System. Wheeling Mayor Denny Magruder and Dr. William Mercer will serve as coaches.

“I think we all appreciate Bishop Darrell,” Mercer said. “He’s a standard in our community and this (Thanksgiving) giveaway is just fantastic.”

Magruder thanked Cummings for the work he has done for three decades in helping those in need during various holidays throughout the year.

“They not only provide food for nourishment and clothing, they provide hope,” Magruder said. “This is a great event for the community.”
