WHEELING — Wheeling Health Right celebrated the final day of its hygiene item drive with a Community Appreciation Day and Fill The Mobile Unit Challenge on Wednesday.
Erin George, assistant director of Wheeling Health Right, said the organization has been collecting items since Sept. 1 for its patients in need. She said the need for such items was pointed out by employee Shelia McGee.
“We noticed we are in need of not only hygiene items, but winter essentials and individually packaged food,” she said. “So, we thought we would take it a step further and have a Fill The Mobile Unit Challenge on the last day.”
Throughout the day, people dropped off a variety of items including soaps, shampoo, bodywash, pads, socks, water, snacks and more.
Wheeling Health Right employees and other local health organizations including the Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department were on hand with information. Music was played and hot dogs and chips were available for people to eat.
Visitors could also meet the staff and take a tour of the facility.
“In this day and age, people need help,” George added. “So, they are coming in for health care, they don’t have the funds to buy soap or shampoo or conditioner or even have winter essentials to keep them warm; hats and gloves to go outside. Hand warmers are another thing we ask for on our wish list.”
George said Wheeling Health Right is also planning to host a Trunk or Treat event for the community from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Health Right parking lot, 61 29th Street, Wheeling.
“We’re trying to get the community to understand that we’re here for them other than just for health care needs,” she said. “We’re here if you need hygiene items. We’re going to have Trunk or Treat in October where we will be passing out candy for the children and resources for the families. We’re here for you, offering that compassionate care when that is needed. We just want everyone to know we are here and we’re here if you need us.”
