Kudlak, Scherich Vying for Marshall County Commission Seat

Democrat Leigh Ann Scherich, left, and Republican Jim Kudlak are running for a seat on Marshall County Commission.

MOUNDSVILLE — Two Marshall County residents are vying for a seat on their county commission, which opened after current commissioner Scott Varner announced his retirement. Republican Jim Kudlak and Democrat Leigh Ann Scherich are seeking to fill that opening.

Kudlak believes voters should choose him because he brings “a lifetime of public service, experience leading a government agency, and a practical common-sense approach to problem solving.” He spent 32 years with the Moundsville Police Department, including 10 as its chief. He also has spent 15 years as a Marshall County Schools bus driver, served as an EMT and is currently a commissioner for the Moundsville Firemen’s civil service.

“Those roles have taught me to listen, accept responsibility, to work with people from all walks of life, and to keep public safety and the needs of our community at the forefront,” he said. “As as police chief, I was responsible for managing a government agency, overseeing personnel, working within a budget and making decisions involving taxpayer dollars.

“I understand the importance of distinguishing needs from wants while planning for the future; I will bring that experience and vision to the county's budgeting process with focus on responsible spending, clear priorities, and keeping taxes low.

Kudlak said his campaign slogan is ‘Let’s see what we can do,’ a reflection on how he’ll approach challenges. He believes in gathering the facts, bringing people together and finding workable solutions. He points to his work with fire chief Noel Clark to establish the state’s first combined police and fire hazardous materials response team.

“I've also developed relationships with local and state leaders that can help me connect Marshall County with information, resources, and opportunities,” he said. “I will work with our municipalities, county employees, emergency services, and state officials to move our county forward.

“Above all, I'll be accessible, listen to the residents and explain the decisions we make. “Voters deserve a commissioner who respects their tax dollars, understands public service and is willing to do the work. That is what I offer.”

Scherich, a senior vice president at Truist Bank, said she believes her 32 years of experience working in banking and finance makes her qualified to work as a commissioner. Her volunteer work on the boards of the Marshall County Chamber of Commerce, Regional Economic Development Partnership, Marshall County Recreation and the Moundsville Economic Development Council also give her an informed perspective.

“I understand the importance of economic development, fair taxes, and fiscal responsibility,” she said.

Scherich said another reason people should vote for her is simple: she cares about Marshall County.

“This is home. It's where I've built my life, raised my family, made lifelong friends, and watched our communities grow and change over the years,” she said. “I'm running because I believe in this county and in the people who call it home. I believe we can build on what's already good, address the things that need attention, and keep moving Marshall County forward.

“I want to listen to the people who live here, work with our communities, and do my part to make a difference,” she added.

“This is our county. And I believe our best days can still be ahead. Yes, we can make Marshall County stronger and better — together.”
