GLEN DALE -- The annual Scarecrow Lane competition and exhibit is slated Oct. 12-31 at the historic Cockayne Farmstead, 1111 Wheeling Ave., Glen Dale.
People can create scarecrows for four different categories to try and win a cash prize. Kara Gordon, site manager for the Cockayne Farmstead, said the categories and prizes include: Funniest Scarecrow, $100; Scariest Scarecrow, $100; Most Creative Scarecrow, $100; and People’s Choice, $100.
It costs $10 to enter a scarecrow. Judging by the public will take place while the scarecrows are on display Oct. 12-31. Scarecrows must be put up by Oct. 11.
“Throughout the event, visitors will have the chance to vote for their favorite scarecrows with a donation to the Farmstead of $1 per vote,” Gordon said. “The scarecrow to bring in the biggest donation will be the People's Choice winner. Donations can be made online at any time by scanning the QR code posted onsite with the scarecrows or at cockaynefarmstead.com.
“Cash donations can also be made in the Visitor Center during regular open hours.”
To enter the contest, visit cockaynefarmstead.com or get an entry form at the Cockayne Farmstead Visitor Center. To sponsor Scarecrow Lane, call 304-845-1411 or cockaynehouse@gmail.com.
Gordon said the farmstead is also planning a free Family Fun Night from 5-7 p.m. Oct. 22. It will include a children’s pumpkin decorating contest, games, crafts and s’mores treats.
“Children ages 4-6, 7-9, and 10-13 can bring a decorated pumpkin that night to be entered into the contest for a chance to win a Dairy Queen gift card,” she said.
