MOUNDSVILLE -- Work got underway this week to erect the steel for metal walls at the new Moundsville Recreation Center, 224 Cedar Ave.

The $4,895,413 project is taking place at Third Street and Cedar Avenue in the city.

“The steel erection will probably take a month or so,” Moundsville City Manager Rick Healy said on Wednesday. “The plumbing rough-ins are done for the front section.”

He noted the concrete floor for the front of the building will be poured next week.

“They are also installing storm drain lines,” he added.

The contractor on the job is Dove Contracting of Washington, Pennsylvania.

The center will offer 20,300 square feet of space and be located at the former Sanford Elementary School property, which was razed to make way for the center. It will house two basketball courts, an indoor track, batting cages, community room, party room, concession stand, showers, locker rooms, and a workout room with fitness equipment.

The building is expected to cost about $3.25 million to construct, and the remainder of the $4.8 million total will go toward HVAC, special flooring and equipment.

The Thrasher Group provided the architectural and engineering plans for the building including those related to mechanical, electrical and plumbing services.

Once completed, people can get a membership to access the facility. There will also be rental opportunities for the pickleball and basketball courts, plus the batting cages as well.
