Local celebrities will hoop it up Sunday with hopes it will help Bethlehem Apostolic Temple score big later this month with its annual Thanksgiving food distribution event.

The church is hosting its annual charity basketball event — the Ohio Valley Lions versus the Ohio Valley All-Stars — at 6 p.m. Sunday at Wheeling University’s Alma Grace McDonough Center. The two teams are an eclectic group of local leaders and celebrities playing to help raise money for the Bethlehem Apostolic Temple’s Thanksgiving distribution, to be held at 11 a.m. Nov. 21 at the North Wheeling Community Dream Center.

Bishop Darrell Cummings, lead pastor at the church, said last month at the announcement of the event, that the church is trying to help those who would like a nice Thanksgiving dinner, but the rising prices for food and other items have made that tougher to do.

“We’re in a time where more people are struggling with food insecurity than before,” Cummings said, “and more people are struggling just trying to put gas in the tank and make it to work. And so we believe this year takes on a special need and we’re grateful for those who are able to work with us.”

Several local leaders are stepping in to participate in the Nov. 8 game. Among those vocalizing their support and hitting the court in November are West Virginia Sen. Laura Wakim Chapman, R-Ohio, Del. Shawn Fluharty, D-Ohio, and Tammy Kruse, development director for Youth Services System. Wheeling Mayor Denny Magruder and Dr. William Mercer will serve as coaches.

Those attending Sunday’s event are encouraged to bring canned good donations.
