Powhatan Point man dies in Monday crash
A Powhatan Point man died Monday morning after his pickup truck went off Ohio 148, struck an embankment and caught fire in Belmont County, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
John Makris, 59, was pronounced dead at the scene of the single-vehicle crash in Washington Township. The patrol’s St. Clairsville post is investigating.
Troopers said Makris was driving a 2006 GMC Sierra west on Ohio 148 near milepost 11 at about 5:28 a.m. Nov. 2 when the truck traveled off the right side of the road and into a ditch.
The truck then continued across the centerline and went off the left side of the road, where it struck an embankment and caught fire, according to the patrol. Makris was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, troopers said.
The patrol’s initial release did not identify what caused the truck to leave the roadway. The Beallsville Volunteer Fire Department, the Ohio Department of Transportation and the Belmont County Coroner’s Office assisted the highway patrol at the scene.
The crash remained under investigation Monday.
