Mays Released After Serving Rape Sentence

STEUBENVILLE -Trent Mays, one of two teens convicted of raping a 16-year-old Weirton girl during an night of underage drinking parties in August 2012, was released from a juvenile facility Tuesday.

A juvenile court judge convicted Mays and Ma’Lik Richmond in March 2013. Mays also was found guilty of a charge of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material for having a picture of the victim in an outgoing text message on his cellphone.

Mays was sentenced to a minimum of two years in a Department of Youth Services facility. Richmond was sentenced to a minimum of one year in a state youth detention center and released in January 2014.

Mays and Richmond were determined by visiting Judge Thomas Lipps to be Tier II sex offenders, requiring them to report their address to the county sheriff every six months for 20 years. Lipps in November lowered the classification for Richmond to a Tier I offender, requiring him to report his address to the sheriff once a year for 10 years.

Lipps said at the time of sentencing that he believed Mays’ actions were more “egregious” and ordered one-year sentences on each of his charges to be served consecutively for a total of two years. Lipps allowed Mays to serve his sentence at the Paint Creek Lighthouse Youth Center, a state Department of Youth Services-contracted nonsecure facility that has programs for sex offenders.

Lipps also will hold another sexual classification hearing for Mays to determine whether his ruling should be modified.

Lawyer Bob Fitzsimmons, who represents the victim and her family, issued a statement:

“We hope the guilty parties hold a higher standard of morals and values as their rehabilitation continues. We also hope they realize the magnitude of lifelong pain that they have caused the victim, and pray that the memory of their crime lives in their souls as a constant reminder to treat women with dignity and respect.”

Mays’ attorney, Adam Neeman, couldn’t be reached for comment.
