WHEELING – Police believe a Coshocton, Ohio, man arrested after a traffic stop in downtown Wheeling Saturday night may have been involved in a shots fired incident on Wheeling Island earlier that night.
Police arrested Donaven Jaquan White, 20, after a traffic stop for a defective tail light on his vehicle at 11th and Market streets about an hour after a reported shooting at an apartment building on the north end of Wheeling Island. White’s vehicle fit the description of a car leaving the scene of the 10:10 p.m. shooting.
As a result of the traffic stop, police found a handgun, two spent shell casings and several individually wrapped bags of marijuana inside the vehicle.
White was charged with attempt to deliver a controlled substance, battery and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
He also has multiple outstanding warrants against him for unspecified charges. He could face additional charges as the investigation continues, police said.
Detective Sgt. Gregg McKenzie said no one was injured in the shooting on North Wabash Street during which at least one round struck an apartment building, breaking a window.
McKenzie said White has not been charged with the shooting, but charges could be filed upon completion of the investigation.
A 17-year-old girl was in the vehicle with White at the time of the traffic stop, McKenzie said.
“She will be charged with battery on a police officer, obstructing and disorderly conduct,” he said.
The apartment building where the shooting occurred is located in the 400 block of North Wabash Street. Witnesses told police they have observed “a lot of traffic in and out of that building.”
White remained in the Northern Regional Jail at press time. The juvenile also is in custody.
