WHEELING -- Police say they are making progress in the investigation of the shooting death of 41-year-old Ahmid Salem Hinton, who was shot multiple times in front of a Wheeling Island home in the early morning hours of May 9.
Wheeling Police Department spokesman Philip Stahl said Monday, "We still do not have a solid suspect at this time, but our detectives are making progress, looking through hours of multiple surveillance cameras in the surrounding areas and questioning individuals who may have information."
Wheeling police and fire department officials attempted to save Hinton, but he died during emergency surgery at Ohio Valley Medical Center at about 5 a.m. on the day of the shooting.
According to preliminary reports, police on patrol reportedly heard shots in the area of 7 S. Penn St. at about 1:40 a.m. May 9. There, they found Hinton on the sidewalk.
Hinton was able to tell officers that an unknown male approached him in a vehicle from the intersection of South Penn and Virginia streets. The shooter then got out of his vehicle, approached Hinton and shot him multiple times.
Police said Hinton told them the shooter got back into his car and fled north on South Penn Street then onto Zane Street.
Police were unable to locate the shooter, but did impound several vehicles later that day. During a news conference, police said they believe Hinton was the sole target of the shooting.
