I-470 Bridge Will Be Reduced to One Lane During Work

By CARRI GRAHAM For The Intelligencer 2 min read

BELLAIRE -- Beginning in mid-April, the Interstate 470 bridge will be reduced to one lane in both directions.

According to Ohio Department of Transportation Public Information Officer Lauren Borell, work crews have been "just maintaining" through traffic for repairs already underway on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bridge, the I-470 bridge, using orange road cones and road work signs. However, beginning in mid-April, there will be single-lane closures on the bridge in both the east and westbound lanes. As of Tuesday, no exact day had been set for these closures to begin. The lane closures will continue through June.

After lane closures end in June, construction and repairs to the bridge will continue as before until the project is fully completed. The completion date for this multi-million dollar project is set for Oct. 15.

ODOT's $3.2 million project on the 41-year-old bridge began in February 2018 on the Ohio-West Virginia state line. The bridge carries four lanes of interstate highway over the Ohio River and connects Bellaire and Wheeling. The current repairs are part of the bridge rehabilitation project. ODOT's contractor for this extensive project is Complete General Construction Co. out of Columbus.

As a part of this rehabilitation project, the construction crews are repairing the bridge deck, which is the surface or roadway of the bridge that supports vehicular traffic. In addition to this ongoing project, the bridge's beams are being painted.
