Interstate 70 West Traffic Pattern Scheduled to Change Today

Crews with the Kokosing Co. of Westerville, Ohio, wasted no time Monday evening in starting the redecking process of the Spruce Street Bridge over Interstate 470 in Bethlehem.

WHEELING -- Drivers on Interstate 70 heading west into Ohio should prepare for more traffic pattern changes starting Wednesday.

In anticipation of the I-70 bridges project, crews with Swank Construction will start the morning diverting traffic heading west into the eastbound lanes, just past the Wheeling Tunnel. One lane of traffic will be maintained to the Marion Street exit in Bridgeport.

According to the DOH, the traffic pattern will remain in place through the first phase of the I-70 bridges contract -- approximately 18 months.

Motorists should expect delays.

Meanwhile, in other local traffic matters, the Spruce Street Bridge in Bethlehem, which is at exit 2 off I-470, closed Monday evening as crews from Kokosking Construction Co. of Westerville, Ohio, began a deck replacement project.

Kokosing finished the Chapel Street Bridge project on Monday, and later that evening closed the Spruce Street Bridge. Crews worked through the night, as the DOH has asked for the bridge work to be completed prior to any major closures related to the I-70 bridges project.

The ramps to enter and exit I-470 remain open; however, depending on where a driver lives in the village, or for vehicles heading into Marshall County, the newly redecked Chapel Hill Bridge is now part of the daily commute.

In addition to replacing the deck on the Spruce Street Bridge, Kokosing will paint the bridge's steel frame and make repairs to the structure. The project will see the bridge closed through Feb. 1, 2020.

The Spruce Street project is similar to the Chapel Street project, as it will require scheduled evening and night-time I-470 lane closures between Elm Grove and W.Va. 2 throughout the deck removal phase. The first of those closures took place Tuesday evening. This is part of a $6.1 million plan to repair that span, along with the ongoing Chapel Road Bridge project.

Starting at /week.
