Photo Provided Homecoming King Daron Weekley of Sistersville, left, and queen Emily Bender of Burgettstown, Pennsylvania are congratulated by President Stephen Greiner.

WEST LIBERTY– West Liberty University students selected Emily Bender and Daron Weekley, as homecoming queen and king for 2019 on a fall day that started out chilly but transformed into a sunny day, perfect for the festivities at West Family Stadium.

“I am so proud to represent my university and my fraternity as homecoming king. It’s been a great day,” said Weekley, who is a senior from Sisterville.

He plans on a career in medicine post-commencement.

The crowning ceremony took place at halftime during the 1 p.m., Saturday homecoming football game against the Concord University. The Hilltoppers dominated the game, winning with a score of 47-6.

Bender is a human biology major from Burgettstown, Pennsylvania, representing Lambda Psi Sigma. She is the daughter of Debbie and Michael Bender and plans on being a physician assistant after commencement.

Voting took place last Wednesday when the student body voted on candidates in the College Union.

Also honored at the homecoming game were this year’s Wall of Honor alumni, California engineering CEO Fred Kinder and Main Street Bank CEO Rich Lucas of Wheeling.

The game drew a crowd that enjoyed tailgating nearby.

Students ended their homecoming festivities with a 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. dance at WLU’s Academic, Sports and Recreation Complex.

Alumni enjoyed the after-game at the newly opened Mac’s Club II located directly across from campus and the annual Homecoming Post Party planned for 10 p.m. – 2 a.m. at Generations Restaurant & Pub.

Today includes another invitation-only event, the dedication of the West Family Athletic Complex and Tim Weaver Memorial Track.

After the ceremony, there is a soccer double header on the new field with WLU taking on the University of Charleston, men play at 1 p.m. and women at 3 p.m.
