Wagering begins in time for Super Bowl Sunday

WHEELING — It’s Super Bowl weekend, and bets are on at Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack.

Sports betting went online at the track beginning at 11 a.m. Friday. A few customers placed bets immediately, but staff expected traffic to pick up considerably as word spread throughout the day.

Delaware North, owners of the track, announced late Thursday its agreement with London-based International Game Technology to power retail and mobile sports betting at its operations in West Virginia, including those at Wheeling Island and the Mardi Gras Casino near Charleston.

The agreement also includes retail sports betting only at its track in South Memphis, Arkansas.

Carrie Scanlon, spokeswoman for the track, stressed sports betting by phone app is not yet available through the Wheeling Island casino.

“We are aggressively pursuing completion of the app,” she said.

Customers instead must come to the track to place bets. They may place sports bets at “Betly” kiosks placed throughout the casino, or at the sports betting desk in the sports bar area at the back of the casino.

Bets only on sports competitions are the only ones being accepted at this time at the track. In addition to the Super Bowl on Sunday, customers may place bets on professional and college basketball contests, and golf matchups.

“We’re always looking at things to bring people in, give them a great time, and give them that Wheeling feeling,” Scanlon said.

The casino on Wheeling Island originally launched sports betting in December 2018 at the track and on a “Bet Lucky” mobile app.

But a dispute with vendor Miomni Gaming and a third-party software provider prompted the new gambling service to be shut down three months later. There had been no sports betting at the track since that time until Friday.

Sports betting is happening at the Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack and Resort in Chester, but the casino does not have a sports betting app. Its sportsbook is operated through the William Hill Co.

Two other casinos in the state offer sports betting through smartphones. The Hollywood Casino in Charles Town has as agreement with DraftKings to be its provider, while the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs is aligned with FanDuel.
