Zach Abraham Resigns From Ohio County Board of Education; Will Focus on County Commission Race

Zach Abraham has resigned from his seat on the Ohio County Board of Education now that he is also running for county commission, school officials announced Monday.
The issue was raised recently about Abraham’s candidacy for Ohio County Commission while also serving on the BOE, school officials said.
Abraham contacted the West Virginia Ethics Commission for clarification and interpretation of state law, and the commission notified him Friday that there may be an issue with a sitting non-partisan BOE member simultaneously running for a partisan political position, he said. In response, Abraham decided to resign from his position on the board and will be returning compensation he was paid for attending meetings in February, March and April.
“It has been a sincere privilege and a humble honor to serve as an Ohio County Board of Education member,” Abraham said in a written statement. “I have appreciated the opportunity to live out and contribute to our mission and vision while supporting our community and serving our students and families.”
Abraham notified Superintendent Kim Miller, the other board members and the district’s solicitor about his resignation Monday. It was not know when his position on the board to be replaced or by whom.
“Although this notice is sudden, I believe this is the right decision for the BOE, the citizens of Ohio County, and the election process to resolve this issue,” he said. “I am confident that the remaining members of the BOE will continue to successfully carry out our mission during the next several weeks until the election of new BOE members.”
