State education map: Most Northern Panhandle counties on remote learning next week due to COVID-19

Students from Hancock to Wetzel counties will be on remote learning this coming week, meaning students won’t be back in class at the earliest until Dec. 3 after Gov. Jim Justice closed schools to in-person learning for a week following Thanksgiving.

The latest West Virginia Department of Education COVID-19 school re-entry map, released at 5 p.m. Saturday, shows Hancock, Brooke and Ohio counties in orange, meaning there is a heightened risk of increased community transmission of COVID-19. Marshall County remains red, where it has been for the past few weeks now, which signifies a significant risk of community spread of the virus.

Wetzel County was gold, which would allow in-person classes to take place, but according to the Department of Education, Wetzel County is among a group statewide that have decided to halt in-person learning at the present time. Joining Wetzel in this plan are Upshur, Grant, Hampshire, Clay and Nicholas counties.

Tyler County is in yellow.

Statewide, there are six counties red including Marshall. The others are Berkeley, Hardy, Jackson, Mineral and Wood.

There are 13 orange counties including Ohio, Brooke and Hancock. The other 10 are Boone, Cabell, Hampshire, Jefferson, Mason, Putnam, Ritchie, Wayne, Wirt and Wyoming.

There are 12 gold counties, which allows for in-person instruction with increased mitigations including face coverings for children grades 3 and above at all times. Sports also can continue.

The gold counties are Barbour, Clay, Harrison, Kanawha, Lincoln, Mingo, Monroe, Morgan, Nicholas, Preston, Upshur and Wetzel.

The Department of Education classified 14 counties as yellow, meaning in-person instruction and extracurricular practices and competitions may occur.

The yellow counties are Calhoun, Fayette, Grant, Greenbrier, Logan, Marion, McDowell, Mercer, Monongalia, Pleasants, Raleigh, Randolph, Taylor and Tyler.

There are 10 green counties, which signifies minimal community transmission.

The green counties are Braxton, Doddridge, Gilmer, Lewis, Pendleton, Pocahontas, Roane, Summers, Tucker and Webster.
