Hancock County Joins Ohio, Marshall Counties in ‘Red’ on COVID Map

Hancock County moved back to "red" Friday on the state's COVID-19 alert map, putting three of the four counties in the Northern Panhandle in that highest-risk designation.

Hancock joined Ohio and Marshall counties in "red" on the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources daily COVID-19 alert map, while Brooke County remained in "orange." That means schools in all four counties likely will spend next week on remote learning.

Both Hancock's infection rate and percent positivity rose significantly from Thursday's map to Friday's. Its infection rate went from 93.22 positive cases per 100,000 residents Thursday to 102.15 on Friday. Its percent positivity went from 7.28 on Thursday to 8.53 on Friday.

Ohio County's infection rate was 82.45 positive cases per 100,000 residents, with a percent positivity of 9.21 on Friday.

Marshall County's infection rate was 120.25 positive cases per 100,000 residents, the second-highest infection rate Friday behind Mineral County's 157.91. Marshall's percent positivity was 11.60.

The Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department reported 43 new positive cases in its Friday night release. That brings Ohio County's overall totals to 1,833 positive cases and 22 COVID-related deaths.

The department will hold free COVID testing Saturday from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at three sites: Valley Grove Volunteer Fire Department, 355 Fire House Lane, Valley Grove; Warwood Fire Station, Station 9, 1301 Richland Ave.; and Wheeling Island Fire Station, Station 5, 11 North Wabash St.

The free clinics are for those with or without symptoms and no insurance is needed. Participants need to bring a driver's license, photo ID or other proof of address. There are no residency restrictions. Patients under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The Marshall County Health Department announced 47 new positive cases and eight new positive cases in its Friday night report. That brings the county's overall totals to 1,253 confirmed cases, 193 probable cases, 12 hospitalizations and 33 associated deaths.

Marshall County will hold free COVID testing at the health department at 513 6th St. in Moundsville on Saturday, then Monday through Friday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Brooke County had an infection rate Friday of 89.86 positive cases per 100,000 residents and a percent positivity of 7.69.
