Both the Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department and the Marshall County Health Department announced two more COVID-related deaths Wednesday, as cases continued to rise locally.
For Marshall, it was the third straight day the department has announced new COVID deaths in the county. The two deaths reported Wednesday were an 81-year-old woman who was a resident in a long-term care facility at the time of her passing and an 83-year-old man who was hospitalized at the time of his passing.
There have now been 33 COVID-associated deaths in Marshall County since the pandemic began.
In Ohio County, both of those that died were hospitalized at the time of their passing. The county has now announced 20 COVID-related deaths since the pandemic began.
Marshall County also reported 42 new positive and nine new probable cases Wednesday, bringing the totals to 1,166 confirmed cases, 192 probable cases and 6 hospitalizations. Ohio County announced 32 new positive cases Wednesday, bringing the county's total to 1,744.
Marshall and Ohio counties remained "red," the highest-risk category, on the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources Wednesday COVID-19 alert map. Marshall County had an infection rate of 97.79 cases per 100,000 residents and a percent positivity of 10.13. Ohio County had an infection rate of 89.00 cases per 100,000 residents and a percent positivity of 9.49.
Hancock and Brooke counties were "orange" on Wednesday's map. Hancock County had an infection rate of 96.20 cases per 100,000 residents and a percent positivity of 5.90, while Brooke County had a percent positivity of 78.14 cases per 100,000 residents and a percent positivity of 5.68.
