West Virginia Route 2 through Marshall County will move completely from two to four lanes now that a nearly $96 million project recently was approved through the state government's "Roads to Prosperity" program.
Gov. Jim Justice announced Tuesday that two projects had been approved, including Rt. 2 construction from Proctor to Kent. The project, approximately 5.25 miles long, will upgrade that section of Rt. 2 from two lanes to four.
“This project is one of many on WV 2 that will ultimately provide a safe, convenient highway with increased traffic capacity,” said Melanie Neal, project manager for the West Virginia Department of Transportation. “This will be the last section in Marshall County to be upgraded to a four-lane highway and the connecting piece between the four-lane existing highway at Proctor and the four-lane highway under construction at Kent."
The winning bid on the project went to A.L.L Construction of Mount Storm, which scored the low bid of $95.9 million.
“Both of these projects are important for the communities they serve and all West Virginians should be really proud of how much work our Division of Highways is getting done through my Roads To Prosperity program,” Justice said. “Even during the pandemic, they continue improving our transportation network, which will allow us to bring more people and businesses into our great state for years to come; not to mention all of the jobs that these projects provide.”
The other project is based in Kanawha County, an upgrade to the Sanderson Bridge, which will be built to current standards. The existing bridge was built in 1970 with a wood deck. The new bridge will be concrete and wider. The low bid for that project was $473,000.91 from Alan Stone Co., Inc., of Williamstown.
