WHEELING -- One person is dead and three more were injured after a multi-vehicle crash at the merge point of Interstate 70 and Interstate 470 East in Elm Grove on Sunday evening.
The crash happened around 6:15 p.m. Sunday, Wheeling Police Department spokesman Philip Stahl said. Based on initial reports, Stahl said, a delivery truck hit a passenger vehicle, and the passenger vehicle then hit a semi truck. The woman driving the passenger vehicle died, Stahl said.
The delivery truck caught on fire, which prompted a full response by the Wheeling Fire Department. At one point, Stahl said, I-70 East, I-470 East and National Road all were closed in order for the fire department to extinguish the delivery truck fire. Both interstate routes were closed for several hours as crews cleaned up the crash site.
All three injured people were taken to the hospital with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries, Stahl said. The crash was cleaned up Sunday night. Until then, Wheeling Police alternated opening up I-70 East and I-470 East to get traffic moving.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, Stahl said.
