Justice Targeting June 20 To Lift Mask Mandate
West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice announced Friday that he is targeting June 20, the state of West Virginia’s 158th birthday, as when he will lift the state’s mask mandate.
Justice said during his Friday COVID-19 briefing that he came to this announcement with a direct recommendation from the state’s medical experts.
Justice said that by that time – allowing that the Centers for Disease Control will authorize vaccinations for children ages 12-15 – the state projects that 65% of all West Virginians 12 and older will have at least their first vaccine dose, 75% of those 50 and older will have at least their first dose and 85% of those 65 and older will have their first shots.
“That’s the date we’re going to go with and it just so happens that it coincides with the celebration of this absolutely incredible state on its birthday,” Justice said. “You may come back and say, ‘Well, what if we don’t hit these numbers by then?’ We’ll be close enough. ‘What if you hit the numbers earlier than that?’ We’re still going with that date.”
