$400,000 Grant Awarded to Lee Day Report Center

By Alan Olson 2 min read

The Lee Day Report Center received a $400,000 grant for continued service in the region, one of the latest recipients of the W.Va. Community Corrections grants.

On Tuesday, Gov. Jim Justice announced that $5,417,239 in West Virginia Community Corrections Grant Program funds had been awarded to 30 projects statewide. These funds will be used to assist local communities in the establishment and continued operation of community corrections programs. These funds are administered by the Justice and Community Services section of the W.Va. Department of Homeland Security's Division of Administrative Services.

The Lee Day Report Center, which services Ohio, Marshall, Brooke, Hancock, Wetzel and Tyler counties, offers counseling and other services to adult offenders. Fred McDonald, Executive Director for the Northern Panhandle Community Criminal Justice Board, said the funding would cover the salaries of the counselors.

"We use it to operate the four Lee Day Report Centers that we have," he said. "We have one in Weirton, Wheeling, Moundsville, and New Martinsville. Those funds help pay the salaries of the counselors there."

The funds were awarded to the Marshall County Commission for disbursement. McDonald said the funding will be allocated quarterly in $100,000 chunks. McDonald, in turn, submits a grant report back to Charleston outlining what the funds were used for.

The Lee Day Report Center, now in its 20th year of operation, provides counseling services, including substance abuse counseling, re-entry and job services for parolees, and education services for offenders.
