MARTINS FERRY -- Spots for planting vegetables or flowers are available for people to use at the Community Garden in Martins Ferry.

The Rev. Michael Ziebarth, pastor of the Greek Church of the Life-Giving Fountain, Zoodochos Peghe, said people who want to use a section of the garden for growing whatever variety they like can call him at 740-633-3707 or the Rev. Thomas Marut, pastor of St. Mary Church in Martins Ferry, at 740-633-1416.

The Community Garden is located on Zane Highway between Park Street and Seabrights Lane.

It is situated near the Alert Engine Fire Co. building.

"People who want to plant, there is plenty of space and it is all tilled up," Ziebarth said, adding he received help from John Koucoumaris, president of the Greek Church's parish council.

"We will clearly mark a particular family's project so it's respected. The rest of the bounty is to share."

Ziebarth said he's already planted zucchini and tomatoes in the front row.

"The general stuff I planted is for eating," he said, adding more varieties will be added later.

"We got a good start. First we put tomatoes and zucchini in today, and we'll put in beans and peppers," he added.

"If someone wants to plant, it's for the well-being of the community. We can arrange to mark it and have their own allotments. Whatever people want, we can arrange."

Ziebarth said in the future he hopes to plant some raspberry bushes in the back of the lot.

The garden was established in 2016 with help from city of Martins Ferry officials, who continue to show interest and support for it, Ziebarth noted.
