MARTINS FERRY — East Ohio Regional Hospital’s return led the Eastern Ohio Development Alliance to develop a new award to celebrate that event.

Jim Schoch, executive director of the Eastern Ohio Development Alliance, said the story of East Ohio Regional Hospital reopening is an impressive one. In a Friday ceremony in Walnut Creek, Ohio, the hospital earned recognition in a new category of award — the Re-Emerging Business Excellence Award.

Schoch said the hospital was nominated for the honor by the Belmont County Port Authority and Belmont County Commissioner J.P. Dutton.

“They closed and now they’ve started up and are doing well,” he said.

Schoch said the hospital’s owner, Dr. John Johnson, and Chief Operating Officer Bernie Albertini both were there to accept the award on behalf of EORH. He added that in addition to EORH, six other businesses also received awards.

“It’s a very well deserved award,” he said of EORH.

The alliance annually gives excellence awards to businesses across a 16-county region that includes Athens, Belmont, Carroll, Columbiana, Coshocton, Guernsey, Harrison, Holmes, Jefferson, Monroe, Morgan, Muskingum, Noble, Perry, Tuscarawas and Washington counties. The awards ceremony was part of the EODA’s annual meeting that was held at the Carlisle Village Inn at Walnut Creek.

Dutton and the other commissioners were present at the ceremony.

“As vice president of the Eastern Ohio Development Alliance, it was a pleasure to join with the Belmont County Port Authority in honoring East Ohio Regional Hospital who received EODA’s 2021 Excellence Award,” Dutton said. “I am pleased that the selection committee recognized the significant investment and commitment made by Dr. John Johnson and his project team.

“With tens of millions of dollars invested and over 500 employees, EORH has once again made a tremendous impact to our community while remedying a crucial shortage in health care services,” he added. “This project shows the considerable impact of a private individual making a substantial business decision for the betterment of Belmont County. For that, we are extremely grateful.”

EORH opened its doors again in February after being closed by its former owner, Alecto Healthcare Services of California, in 2019. Johnson purchased the hospital in the spring of 2020. In addition to emergency room services, a skilled nursing unit and retail pharmacy, the hospital also has laboratory services, imaging/radiology services, a sleep lab and robotic knee replacement.
