CHARLESTON — It appears Bluefield State College won’t be opening a satellite campus in Wheeling at the former Ohio Valley Medical Center property.
On Thursday, Bluefield State’s 80-plus page proposal to offer three, two-year engineering programs in Wheeling was unanimously voted down by the West Virginia Council for Community and Technical Colleges’ board, according to Community and Technical Colleges spokeswoman Jessica Tice.
Bluefield State did not have a representative at the meeting or on the call to discuss the college’s position. A Bluefield State College official contacted by phone Thursday afternoon said the college did not learn that the Wheeling plan would be on the agenda this month until the meeting was underway.
However, a spokesperson for the Community and Technical Colleges said that Corley Dennison, the CTC’s Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, had been in regular contact with Bluefield State in the weeks leading up to Thursday's meeting regarding the plan being included on the agenda.
Wheeling Mayor Glenn Elliott also said Thursday that the city has several parties interested in acquiring parcels of the former OVMC property, and this his focus now is in getting the property fully into private hands.
