WHEELING -- National Twins Day is Saturday. WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital was celebrating a few days early, with Dr. Peter Bala as the master of ceremonies.
In an eight-hour span between this past Sunday and Monday, Bala delivered three sets of twins.
Bala said he has been in practice for more than 37 years and has delivered around 12,000 babies.
"This is the first time that I have delivered three sets of twins -- all my own patients -- within eight hours," Bala said.
"It was truly an honor to attend these deliveries and I am grateful to Dr. Emily Morris for helping me with two of the deliveries as my hands were very full."
Nicole Fuscardo and Clay Johnson of Martins Ferry welcomed twins Saylor and Luka between Sunday night and Monday morning. The babies were born within a half-hour of each other on the two days. Then Carrie and Tim Bledsoe of Moundsville welcomed Callie and Cooper, and had 3-year-old sibling Kaden waiting for them at home.
A third set of twins were born on Monday as well.
Bala wanted to make sure everyone who assisted in that whirlwind eight hours received the recognition they had earned.
"Special thanks to the nursing staff for helping to deliver all these little miracles at Medical Park," Bala said. "I have one more set of twins to deliver soon for a total of four sets in six days. What a great way to celebrate National Twins Day."
