After falling ill while on the road earlier this week, Gov. Jim Justice announced Wednesday evening that he is being treated for possible Lyme disease.
In a statement released through his office, Justice said he began feeling "extremely sick" after events in Wheeling and Blacksville to announce the GameChanger program in West Virginia schools.
"I immediately got tested for COVID-19 and was negative, but I am still having symptoms and nowhere near 100%," Justice said. "As of now, I am being treated for possible Lyme disease."
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that can be transmitted through the bite of an infected tick. Usually, it initially causes symptoms such as a rash, fever, headache, and fatigue. If not treated early, it can spread to a person's joints, heart, and nervous system. Prompt treatment can help lead to quick recovery.
Justice said he will postpone his regularly scheduled COVID-19 briefings this week and will hold his next as soon as possible after the Memorial Day holiday.
