WHEELING — AAA’s daily gas price tracker shows that the Wheeling metro area, not including Ohio, has the second-highest average price of gasoline in West Virginia at $4.758 per gallon. Weirton is No. 1 at $4.769 per gallon.

The average price per gallon in Charleston is $4.597, while Morgantown comes in at $4.743.

In years past, Wheeling always was at the low end of the state average, but that has changed since the influx of oil and gas workers into the region.

According to AAA, “The cost of gasoline is increasing rapidly across the country in part due to seasonal trends and the rising cost of crude oil. The cost of a barrel of oil is nearing $120, nearly double from last August, as increased oil demand outpaces the tight global supply. Meanwhile, domestic gasoline demand rose last week in the wake of a robust Memorial Day weekend of travel. As a result, the national average for a gallon of gas surged 25 cents in one week to hit $4.86. Today’s national average is 59 cents more than a month ago, and $1.81 more than a year ago.

The following is a list of the average prices in several West Virginia locations, according to AAA:

$4.675 Bridgeport

$4.601 Beckley

$4.620 Huntington

$4.590 Martinsburg

$4.635 Parkersburg.

Starting at $2.99/week.
