Edgington Lane Playground To Get $500,000 in Upgrades

WHEELING - The playground on Edgington Lane in Woodsdale is on its way to getting an expected $500,000 in upgrades.
Wheeling City Manager Robert Herron said the project is expected to go out to bid this week, with a bid opening slated for Aug. 16.
Construction could begin as soon as this fall "if the bids come in appropriately," according to Herron.
"It's getting a complete overhaul," he said.
A design rendering of the proposed playground renovations shows upgrades to the existing tennis court with the establishment of four pickleball courts there. A small obstacle course is planned for construction.
The existing basketball court would be reconfigured into a "Euro-style multi-use court," and a seating area with shade structure is being proposed for the area.
There would also be improvements to the play area, with a new safety surface being installed, Herron said.
Needed landscaping also would be included, according to the rendering.
The city of Wheeling has received a $250,000 state Land and Water Conservation Grant to help pay for half of the project. Matching funds of $150,000 from the Hess Foundations and $100,000 from the city complete the $500,000 budget.
The city also will provide some in-kind work valued at $50,000, bringing the amount set aside for the work to $550,000, Herron said.
According to its website, the City of Wheeling Parks and Recreation Department maintains and operates more than 30 public spaces, 22 neighborhood playgrounds, the Nelson Jordan Center, nine tennis courts, four pickleball courts, 19 basketball courts, and more than 25 ballfields in the city.
Most of the parks in the city have already received some renovation in recent years.
