Ohio County Schools Continues Bond Construction Over Summer

Construction is happening this summer to build a cafeteria addition to Woodsdale Elementary School.

WHEELING – Summertime doesn’t mean there’s a break in construction at Ohio County Schools properties.

Work continues on construction projects throughout the district, paid for through a $44 million bond passed in 2018. Construction at Wheeling Park High School, Woodsdale Elementary, Wheeling Middle School and the Warwood School is on its way to completion by the time school starts in late August or shortly after, according to Assistant Superintendent Rick Jones.

At Wheeling Park High School, most projects are already completed with one exception – the reconfiguration of the massive former media center space on the second floor of the school.

“It could end up being the most impressive space in the county,” Jones said. “We expect to have it done by the beginning of September.”

The former media center now has skylights, and has been divided into specific areas.

A maker space is planned for the area, as well as a small lab and a “kiva” – a round room where students can gather for collaboration on projects.

There are still remaining spots for some glass-walled “huddle rooms” where students can meet in small groups, and an open flexible seating room to use for large instruction purposes, according to Jones.

He said Woodsdale Elementary School is getting a new cafeteria addition, while classrooms in the building are being reconfigured into a new layout.

At Wheeling Middle School, an ADA-compliant entrance is being placed at the front of the school, according to Jones. Presently, the school is only accessible for those with disabilities in the rear of the property.

The school is getting a man trap security portal and maker space, as well as a new heating, ventilation and air conditioning system.

The Warwood School also is in line for a new HVAC, Jones said. Other improvements primarily are happening on the elementary school side.

The Annex Building outside Triadelphia Middle School also is being prepped for a new life, as a vital link in the school district’s new Community-In-Schools programs

“We’re cleaning out a lot of rooms to make a county-wide clothing hub, food pantry and storage place for whatever else families might need,” Jones said. “We will have sheets, blankets and beds, dishes. Whatever we can collect.”
