Before the ink dries on his 2022 re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives, 2nd District Congressman Alex Mooney threw his hat in the ring for a U.S. Senate race to challenge U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin in 2024.

The campaign website for Mooney, R-W.Va., switched over Tuesday morning from his U.S. House race to “Alex Mooney: U.S. Senate.” Mooney confirmed the news later Tuesday morning on WV MetroNews Talkline with host Hoppy Kercheval.

Mooney will seek the Republican nomination in 2024 to challenge Manchin, D-W.Va., who will be up for his third full six-year term. Mooney just won re-election to the House after defeating Democratic opponent Barry Wendell last Tuesday 66% to 34%.

He is the first GOP candidate to declare for the seat.
