Oil Mud Leak Closes Several Roads in Marshall County

MOUNDSVILLE – An oil and gas truck headed to a Tug Hill/EQT site in Marshall County leaked oil mud on more than 14 miles of roads, leading to several closures Monday, according to the West Virginia Division of Highways.
The leak happened Sunday night and the county roads stayed closed throughout Monday, WVDOH said. According to WVDOH, the truck leaked drilling fluid on the route. That led to the closure of Roberts Ridge Road from Fallen Timber Lane to Lindsay Lane Road, all of Lindsay Lane Road and Round Bottom Hill Road.
WV 2 also was impacted by the leakage just south of Moundsville, but crews had that 2½ -mile portion of road reopened Monday. A clay-and-sand-based absorbent material was placed on that roadway to help dry it.
The call came to Marshall County's 911 center around midnight, county EMA Director Tom Hart said. The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection also was notified overnight.
Tug Hill and EQT are hiring a professional contractor to clean the closed roadways, WVDOH said. The spill, along with Monday's snowy and wet conditions, caused slippery roadways.
WVDOH is monitoring the cleanup and advises motorists to avoid the areas. The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection had staff on site and no environmental impacts had been observed.
