By SHELLEY HANSON 3 min read

WHEELING - The 31st annual Chocolate Extravaganza is slated from 1-3 p.m. May 7 at Temple Shalom in Wheeling.

The event, which is being held for the first time in about three years, will feature around 15 different chocolatiers and more than 10 cakes for a cake raffle. More than 50 door prizes are also to be given away.

Chocolatiers scheduled to participate include: Domino’s Pizza, Chef N’ Company, The Fat Apple Bakery, Figaretti’s, Hangover BBQ, Public Market, Oglebay Resort, Sarris Candies, The Cheese Melt, Wheeling Park High School Patriot Cafe, Valley Cheese, Wheeling Country Club, Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino- Racetrack and West Virginia Northern Community College Culinary Arts.

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the door on the day of the event or by calling Temple Shalom at 304-233-4870 or going to the Facebook page "Temple Shalom-Wheeling, WV" and clicking on the featured Chocolate Extravaganza ad.

Temple Shalom is located at 23 Bethany Pike, Wheeling.

Tricia Gilson, who is co-chairwoman of the event with Mia Porter, said they are excited to have the extravaganza running again. It was canceled in the past because of COVID-19 pandemic concerns.

"We have both chaired the event in the past so we had experience preparing for the event. We are really excited to be able to bring the Chocolate Extravaganza back," she said. "All the committees worked really hard to ensure this year’s Chocolate Extravaganza would be the best one yet."

During the event people are given a container to fill with a sample of their choosing from each chocolate maker. People can sit inside and eat their treats or take them home. The types of chocolate treats vary widely and sometimes include sweet and savory combinations and even chocolate-infused drinks.

"Upon arrival everyone who hands in a ticket will receive a compostable container which will contain a Chocolate Extravaganza Ad booklet," Porter said. "Make sure to look inside the ad booklet for a sticker, as that will determine the door prize winners.

"Everyone will then have an opportunity to purchase cake raffle tickets in which they could potentially win one of our eleven cake donations. Finally, everyone will visit each chocolatier table and receive a delicious chocolate sample. With at least 15 chocolatiers, expect a full box of chocolate treats."

Rabbi Joshua Lief said proceeds from the event benefit not only the temple's programming but also outreach done in the community, such as the interfaith service, the Sept. 11 memorial service and donations to Catholic Charities and the Soup Kitchen of Greater Wheeling.

Lief said he has attended the event for many years because he grew up in Wheeling.

"I'm most looking forward to seeing all our friends and neighbors being able to join us again. That's the sweetest treat of all," he said.
