WHEELING -- The school year may be just about over in Ohio County Schools, but learning opportunities for students are set to happen throughout the summer.
It used to be the hallways in school facilities were empty during June, July and much of August -- but not anymore, according to JoJo Shay, innovation coordinator for Ohio County Schools.
"We try to run camps and academic opportunities for students who want to either better their academic skills or participate in engaging and innovative activities," she said.
"We try to offer opportunities to kiddos so they have something to do during summer."
There will be robotics camps again this year for students, but there is an intent to vary the activities from year to year, Shay continued.
"Our robotics program is flourishing, and we wish to expose our students to more," she explained. "We will also have an engineering camp that's pretty much along the same lines in taking a problem and trying to solve it."
There also will be opportunities for students who want to be on camera or learn video production, as well as maker camps for those wanting hands-on projects, Shay continued.
"We try to meet the needs of all students, and meet the needs of everyone," she said.
The following is a list of activities planned in Ohio County Schools this summer. Pre-registration is necessary.

Transportation, breakfast, and lunch will be provided for students at the camps and summer schools.
Elementary School Opportunities
– Elementary summer school for students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade is set for 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. each weekday June 26 through July 21 at Ritchie Elementary School.
– Elementary STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) camps for grades 3-5 will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on designated dates at the Wheeling Park High School Innovative Learning Center.
– From June 26 through June 30 there will be an elementary multimedia camp for students. Participants will get to explore the world through photography, video, and sound.
– An elementary robotics camp is set for July 3-July 7, with no camp on July 4. Students will work with Legos that move, make sounds, and can be coded to complete simple tasks. They will learn to build and control robots using basic visual programming language.
– On July 10-14 there will be an elementary making camp. Students will use their imagination, hands-on skills, artistic mediums and making tools to create projects.
– The last of the elementary camps -- an engineering camp -- happens July 17-July 21. Students will spend a week designing creative solutions to engineering challenges "that will push their imagination to the test," according to organizers.
Middle School Opportunities
– A career and technical education summer camp for seventh and eighth grade students is set for the week of June 5-9 at WPHS. The activities explored introduces students to the CTE class opportunities they will have at WPHS. Classes will happen each day from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Eighth graders can earn a half credit by attending each class and completing an additional assignment.
– Middle school summer school for those in grades 6 through 8 is set for 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. each weekday from June 26-July 21 at WPHS.
The morning curriculum will focus on reading and math, while in the afternoon there will be STEAM and enrichment activities.
– Middle School STEAM Camps for those in grades 6 through 8 will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on specific dates at WPHS.
– From June 26 through June 30 there will be a middle school multimedia camp. Participants will get to explore the world through photography, video, and sound.
A middle school Vex robotics camp is set for July 3 through July, with no camp on July 4.
The middle school making camp is set for July 10-14., while on July 17 through July 21, a middle school engineering camp is scheduled.
High School Opportunities
– Online summer school opportunities for high school students take place May 30 through June 28. Classes available include Health 1, Health 2 and art appreciation.
– In-person summer school classes for WPHS are set for 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m each weekday from June 5-June 23. There will be no classes on June 19 or June 20.
Classes offered included in-person summer physical education, in-person summer credit recovery. online summer school -- including Health 1, Health 2 and art appreciation.
