Today Is Deadline To Seek Ohio County Board of Education Seat

WHEELING -- Today is the last day those interested may apply for a vacant seat on the Ohio County Board of Education.
During a special board meeting Thursday night, board president Andy Garber noted that as of the end of the day Thursday just three letters of interest had been received at the board office.
The deadline to apply is 4 p.m. today.
The board is set to meet at 6 p.m. next Thursday night to select a new board member from among the candidates submitting resumes and letters of interest.
"Considering at this point that there are only three applicants for the vacancy on the board of education as of the end of the day, I would suggest -- that rather than each of us picking two -- that we call each to come in (next Thursday) for a discussion on the open position before the board, and the board will ask comments."
Those interested in applying for the vacancy should fill out the digital form at boe.ohio.k12.wv.us/page/board-of-education-vacancy, then email their resume and letter of intent to boe@wphs.ohio.k12.wv.us.
Hard copy applications also are being accepted, and those can be dropped off at the Ohio County Board of Education Office, Human Resources Department, 2203 National Road, Wheeling, WV 26003.
Each candidate next week will be given up to five minutes to present to board members why the candidate should be selected to join the board, and board members will have the opportunity to ask the candidates questions.
The meeting, an ensuing discussion, will take place before the public.
The board is seeking someone to succeed former member Grace Norton, who passed away May 27.
The board has 45 days from the time of the vacancy -- or until July 4 -- to appoint someone to the empty seat.
If the board does not fill the vacant seat next week, members will submit the names of the candidates considered to the West Virginia Board of Education office of the superintendent for consideration.
Norton was a resident of Magisterial District 1, and the vacancy leaves the board without a representative from District 1.
Those applying for the seat, however, do not have to live in District 1. But preference will be given to those who do reside in District 1, current board members have determined.
The unexpired term ends June 30, 2024.
In other matters Thursday night, Superintendent Kim Miller updated board members on her trip to the West Virginia Association of School Administrators meeting this week in Charleston. She announced that during the event, members selected her to be their vice president.
Board of education members also hired Leah Minch as a school nurse at Madison Elementary School. Minch is the daughter of Amy Minch, attendance director for Ohio County Schools.
