Asking city to wait until Winter Freeze Shelter opens

WHEELING -- Neighbors in East Wheeling and the larger community are being asked to gather from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. today outside the City-County Building in Wheeling, 1500 Chapline St., to ask the city to halt a planned eviction of homeless from a camp in East Wheeling until the Winter Freeze Warming Shelter opens.
City Manager Robert Herron on Oct. 6 issued an eviction notice to residents currently located on the hill in East Wheeling, near the Nelson Jordan Center. For the previous two years, this location has been the only city-approved site where people facing homelessness could live. That eviction notice is dated for 1 p.m. Friday and there is not a transition plan, alternative location, or solution following this abrupt action.
The event is being organized by the House of Hagar, a house of hospitality in East Wheeling. For more information, please call Kate Marshall at (304) 218-8373, houseofhagarcatholicworker@gmail.com.
