Students from Wheeling Park and Wheeling Central Catholic high schools are the recipients of the 2023-24 Wheeling Elks Scholarships, the organization announced Wednesday.
Ryleigh Hicks, a senior at Wheeling Park High School, and Levi Estep, a senior at Wheeling Central Catholic High School, each will receive $1,000 from Wheeling Lodge No. 28, according to Elks Youth Activities Chairman Joe Marchlenski. Both are eligible for further state and national Elks scholarships.
Hicks is a two-time winner of the Stifel Award, and was recently named the winner of the WVSSAC Community Service Award. She is a three-year member of the girls' soccer team, and a four-year member of the girls' basketball team. She serves as president of the school's movie club and is an officer of the Key Club. She has also served for two years as a freshman mentor.
Hicks plans to attend Marshall University and major in biomedical engineering.
Estep attended Mountaineer Boys State, and is a member of the Stella Maris Chapter, French, and Science National Honor Societies. He is a past recipient of the Academic Achievement for Excellence in Religion Award.
He also is a four-year member of both the boys' soccer team, and the Teens for Life club. Estep has also volunteered many hours at Corpus Christi Parish in Warwood. He plans to attend Franciscan University of Steubenville and major in engineering.
"We believe it is important to recognize outstanding leadership and scholarship qualities in the youth of our area," said Elks Exalted Ruler Mitch Johnston. "We are proud that more than $4 million in scholarships is awarded nationally by the Elks each year."
