Holiday Adoptions Happening At Ohio County Animal Shelter

TRIADELPHIA - There are needs at the Ohio County Animal Shelter in the coming year, and they start with bleach and Dawn dishwashing liquid.
But overall, there's a lot to celebrate at the shelter. The year 2023 saw the shelter get a new food prep area, roof, paint and lighting on the exterior. Interior painting of the kennels is set to happen in 2024.
Shelter Director Nelson Croft thanked county commissioners for their support this year, as well as County Administrator Randy Russell and project manager Melissa Marko.
The shelter had a solid holiday season leading up to Christmas, according to Croft.
He reported that during the last two weeks, the shelter recently saw 10 dogs adopted, with eight there still in need of homes. The shelter also has had six cats adopted just during the last week, and there are eight cats still at the shelter seeking "fur-ever" humans.
Adoptions cost $80, but come with a $51 voucher to have the animal spayed or neutered, Croft said. The animals also have been vaccinated for kennel-related illnesses.
"Adoption is a lifetime commitment," he continued. "They will be in your life for a short while, but you'll be in their lives forever. Expect a 15-year commitment."
There are needs everyday for food and cleaning products at the animal shelter.
"Everyday out here, we probably use two gallons of bleach," Croft said. "I'm super proud of our crew. I dare say we have some of the cleanest kennels going.
"They haven't been painted though. It's under contract to get everything painted inside."
In addition to bleach, the shelter is in need of Fabuloso and Pine Sol, laundry detergent and especially Dawn dishwashing liquid.
"We don't mean to be picky asking for Dawn," he continued. "We'll take any detergent.
"But Dawn we can bathe our animals in. It's the best flea shampoo you can get."
The shelter also takes in blankets and towels as donations, and pet food and toys are always accepted.
"We've had donations of food so we're pretty solid," Croft said. "But food, snacks and toys - we don't turn them away."
The animal shelter is located at 7011 National Road in Triadelphia and can be reached at 304-547-1013. The facility is open to the public from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
