The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for much of the region, including Hancock, Brooke, Ohio, Marshall and Wetzel counties in West Virginia and Belmont, Harrison, Jefferson and Monroe counties in Ohio. The watch is scheduled to last until 2 a.m.

A tornado watch means that weather conditions are such that a tornado is possible in and around the watch area.

Those counties also are under a flash flood warning until 9:45 p.m. Tuesday and an areal flood watch until 8 a.m. Wednesday

6 p.m. update

Ohio County Schools announced Tuesday evening that, due to severe weather and the threat of flooding, schools will operate on a two-hour delay.

1 p.m. update

The steady rains that fell throughout Tuesday morning in the Ohio Valley have led to flood issues around Ohio County.

In the Woodsdale section of Wheeling, city operations crews cleared branches and leaves from in and around the streams that flowed through the neighborhoods there, keeping them clear from debris so the water that had gotten dangerously high didn’t flow over into the streets. Other parts of Woodsdale dealt with standing water that had cars turning around so they didn’t test the depth.

As buses and cars came off the hill at Wheeling Park High School, which dismissed at noon Tuesday due to flood warnings, the roads leading to the school saw runoff water and detritus that coated the pavement. Other schools also dismissed about 2 1/2 hours early.

Middle Creek in Triadelphia also saw high waters, with a torrent barreling over a bridge.
