WHEELING - West Liberty University President Tim Borchers has run marathons in such places as Minneapolis and New York City, and now he has added Wheeling to the list.
But Borchers took it a little easier and just ran the 5K presented by WVU Medicine Children's during the Ogden Newspapers Wellness Weekend presented by WVU Medicine on Saturday.
Borchers, 54, has been running since 2012.
"It was a New Year’s resolution that I was going to get in shape, so I started running and I got hooked on it," he explained.
In addition to Minneapolis and New York City, Borchers has run races in Fargo, North Dakota, and Lincoln, Nebraska.
Borchers takes a simple approach to training.
"You run a little bit (to start), then you run longer," he said. "Eventually, you get to where you need to be."
Borchers says each week he seeks to increase his mileage as he trains, but he admits his job cuts into his running time.
"I don't run a whole lot now," he said. "It just depends on the week. Some weeks are longer, some are shorter."
Borchers acknowledged West Liberty is a good place to take a run, and he added the track at the university is especially nice for running.
He explained why he enjoys running.
"It's a good stress reliever, and it's just a good feeling when you finish a race," he said. "It's a good way to relieve stress."
