VALLEY GROVE -- A single motorcycle rider was killed in an afternoon accident Monday on National Road outside of Valley Grove near the Pennsylvania border.

According to Chief Deputy Nelson Croft of the Ohio County Sheriff's Office, the rider -- whose name and age were not yet released to the public on Monday evening -- was traveling west on National Road when the bike struck a semi hauling sand from a well pad.

Croft said the semi truck was turning to head east on National Road when the motorcycle and rider struck the semi broadside, sliding under the truck's wheels.

Initial radio traffic indicated that a nearby landing site was being organized for a medical helicopter, but the rider was pronounced dead at the scene soon after first responders arrived.

Units from the Ohio County Sheriff's Department and Ohio County EMS, Triadelphia Police Department, Valley Grove Fire Department and EMS, and West Alexander Fire Department all responded to the accident, which was first reported just after 4 p.m.

The accident remains under investigation, according to Croft, who said a crash reconstruction team was still at the scene Monday evening.

That portion of National Road near the West Virginia and Pennsylvania border was closed to traffic while the accident was being investigated.
