Health Department Shuts Down McLure Hotel
The Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department shut down the McLure Hotel Wednesday afternoon after the city reported large amounts of mold, a visible sewage leak and issues with building elevators.
Ohio County Health Administrator Howard Gamble said Wednesday afternoon that his department was notified by the Wheeling Fire Department on Wednesday afternoon that the building was having an elevator lock out. Upper floors are only able to be accessed by elevators, which are not working.
The smell of the mold was also noticeable in the building, Gamble said, and sewage water was spreading onto the floors of the building.
Gamble said the county oversees permits to operate the hotel. The permit will be suspended until the issues are corrected and another inspection is passed.
The hotel was closed for nearly a month between February and March due to issues with the building’s boiler. At that time, neither the building’s heat nor its hot water were operational. The hotel reopened after the issues were fixed.
McLure staff could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
