A three-vehicle accident injured four people Friday morning on Interstate 79 in Amwell Township.
Four people were injured in a wrong-way crash involving three vehicles on Interstate 79 that shut down the highway in both directions Friday morning in Amwell Township.
According to a Washington County 911 supervisor, the accident was reported at 8:17 a.m. at the 31.5 mile marker.
One person was ejected from their vehicle, according to 911. First responders called for medical helicopters, but flights were grounded due to weather conditions.
State police spokesperson Rocco Gagliardi said the accident occurred when a Hyundai Elantra crossed over from the southbound lanes to the northbound lanes and continued driving south.
The Elantra struck a northbound Toyota Corolla and then split into two separate pieces, according to Gagliardi. The front half of the Elantra went on to hit the guide rail and then a Chevrolet Silverado. The rear portion of the vehicle crossed back over into the southbound lanes.
All four injured were taken from the scene to various hospitals. According to the South Strabane Fire Department, two people were taken to trauma centers in West Virginia in critical condition, and two transported to local hospitals were in stable condition later Friday.
I-79 was closed in both directions between the Lone Pine and Laboratory exits. All lanes reopened at about 12:40 p.m.
State police are investigating.
