WHEELING — Not only did adults race Saturday morning in a half marathon, but children took on a race of their own through Wheeling, too for Ogden Newspapers Wellness Weekend presented by WVU Medicine.
The Ogden Fun Run presented by WVU Medicine Children’s is a non-competitive race that began at the start/finish line on 14th Street while children made their way through Wheeling back to the finish line.
Many children fought hard in the run, but Davis Haggerty crossed the finish line first. After crossing the finish line second in last year’s race, he said he was excited to finish first this year.
Haggerty’s dad Derek Haggerty had him timed at 7 minutes and 15 seconds to finish the race.
Davis said he likes running and being fast.
Davis’ parents started bringing him to the Fun Run because he loves running and participates in cross country at his school.
Davis crossing the finish line first makes both his parents and grandparents proud.
“It makes me proud of his hard work and his dedication to running,” Derek Haggerty said. “He puts his mind to a goal, and he works really hard until he achieves it.”
Audrey Dean was there for the Fun Run while her sister Layla Dean was in the Tiny Tot Trot presented by WVU Medicine as their mom ran the Ogden Newspapers Half Marathon Classic.
This was Audrey’s first year in the Fun Run.
Audrey said she was excited to run in the race. Her dad Dan Dean added Audrey has done a couple races but was excited for this course because of the hills.
While this was Audrey’s first time running, another runner, Silas Hanson, ran for the third time.
He originally started in the Tiny Tot Trot, and his mom Breanna Hanson brought him back for the Fun Run because she described him as “high energy” and thought this would be fun for him.
Some children finished out the race while others raced with their parents.
