Ohio County residents recovering from the deadly June 14 flash floods now have representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency in the area that they can talk to.
A FEMA disaster survivor center opened Monday at the Valley Grove Community Center, while a FEMA disaster relief and recovery center is scheduled to open Tuesday at the Triadelphia Community Center. Both centers will be open 7 a.m.-7 p.m. seven days a week, said Lou Vargo, Ohio County Emergency Management Director.
A second disaster survivor center at the Army Reserve Center in Clator is still in the pipeline to open, Vargo said, and an announcement will be made when it is.
“This is great,” Vargo said of the centers opening. “These are the people who are the experts. They know the rules and they know what’s eligible for recovery. To be able to talk to someone like that is ideal.”
Disaster survivor centers are for those who had suffered more minor damage or loss from the floods, Vargo said. If someone lost a washer and dryer or a hot water heater and is able to fill out the online application, they can go to the survivor center to finalize the process.
For those who lost cars and homes, Vargo said, the disaster relief and recovery center in Triadelphia is the place to go.
Vargo said that those heading to the centers should take as extensive and as complete of a list as they can. They should include pictures of the damage, estimates they’ve received of repair costs and documentation of anything already repaired.
Even those who have completely lost their homes have information they can provide to offer a more accurate picture, Vargo said.
“Even if they have pictures on their cell phones from Christmas or a family gathering, anything,” he said. “Anything that can show them the extent of the losses can help FEMA.”
